We got to the hospital bright and early Tuesday morning. They took Mr. Minter back to get him ready for surgery and Charlie went with him. After a while Charlie let us know that his electrolytes were low and they were trying to get it to the normal range before putting him under for surgery. After several hours Dr. Amiel decided they would not be able to go through with the surgery. We were very disappointed, but this is such an extreme surgery everything has to be perfect to give Mr. Minter the best odds to come through without any complications. We are very thankful that Dr. Amiel is not taking any chances. The doctor tried to squeeze him into the schedule for Thursday, but there was no way so he said it'll be another 2 weeks.
Mr. Minter was admitted to Methodist hospital Tuesday morning and started on a sodium IV to get his electrolytes back up. Thankfully Charlie was able to stay with him in the hospital the entire time because Mr. Minter had several issues with catheters and different pain medications (apparently they gave him too much Vicodin and it made him loopy). He was released Thursday afternoon, went home with a catheter and is feeling good. Dr. Amiel gave him directions to eat more salt (Mr. Minter used to be on a NO-salt diet for his blood pressure!) and keep walking and exercising to keep his strength up for the next attempt at surgery.
We found out one great thing on Tuesday - Dr. Amiel said that his oxygen levels were really good and he feels the more time that passes from when Mr. Minter had pneumonia he will not have to continue using oxygen. This is such a blessing - Mr. Minter is such an active man - you could tell that he was really upset about not being able to get out and do everything he normally does. Who can say they walk 2 miles a day - every day?
Please continue praying for Mr. Minter - he needs to stay healthy for the next 2 weeks so we can get this surgery done. They say that the cancer has not spread anywhere yet - but its hard not to be concerned the longer he has to wait.
